History

in the Making

After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Vernon Bertel decided to join the Navy. At age 17, Vernon was among the many young men who were eager to fight for their country. However, when he was enlisting into the service he came across one small problem. Vernon didn't weigh enough to join. After his consumption of eleven bananas, he returned to the enlistment office and began his tour in World War II. Vernon served in the United States Navy on the battleship New Jersey in the South Pacific. After his three year tour, he returned to his home in St. Louis, Missouri, married, and had three children: his oldest son Michael, his daughter Nancy, and youngest son Mark. Vernon began working in the construction field in 1944 for a St. Louis based construction company called Pappen Construction. After working for Pappen for five years, Vernon ventured out onto his own.  In 1949, he formed Bertel Construction.

Vernon's principles were based on integrity and quality. He worked every job himself from start to finish.  He established great customer relationships with open communication. Because of his knack for beautiful work, it didnt take long for word to get around about his abilities.

After a few short years, he was running a successful construction business with a great reputation. In 1985, when Mark was twenty two years old, Vernon decided to retire to Mountain Home, Arkansas, leaving the family business in the capable hands of his son, Mark.

Mark ran Bertel Construction in St. Louis, Missouri, for nine years. After meeting his wife, Angela, and beginning a family, in 1994 they decided to bring the business to Mountain Home, Arkansas. Mark and Angela have three children: Yvonne, Angie Jr., and Mark Jr. All three of their children have graduated from Mountain Home High School, and all have attended Arkansas State University.  Yvonne and Angie Jr. and Mark Jr. who have each played vital roles at various stages of the business. Angie and Yvonne each played roles with marketing, book keeping etc, while Mark Jr. worked with him for many years before embarking on his own business venture, remodeling vintage trailers and turning them into mobile businesses for clients. (You can find his work here: www.markberteljrconstruction.com) They couldn't be more proud of them, or their four grandchildren!

Mark Sr. has kept the same values that his dad, Vernon, created when he started Bertel Construction. The foundation is the most vital part to any structure, and quality and great customer communication has always been the foundations of this business. But as important as the foundation is,

so is the material it is built from. Mark runs his business with his family. His wife Angela has been as much a business partner as she has been a life partner, and he makes no bones about the fact that his success has hinged upon her help throughout the years. She has been such an important part of his business, from meeting with potential customers and clients, assisting with ordering, invoicing and pricing, to inspecting the work upon job completion. Behind every good man is a great woman, and Angela has been a strong and reliable force for Mark since they were married 25 years ago. Mark concentrates on each job individually, taking care to cover every base and do all the work necessary for any projects you need accomplished. He ensures that the estimating and price comparison will give his customer the best prices possible for the job they want completed. We are looking forward to furnishing your labor and material with prompt, personal service, and at an affordable price.
